The Carretera Austral runs south from Coyhaique to the beautiful village of Caleta Tortel, along the stunning Baker River.

Come and explore this destination that has been established worldwide as one of the best scenic routes to see and visit. You will be astounded by huge forests, rivers, waterfalls, lakes, fjords, mountains, and glaciers. Once here, you will not want to leave.

Itinerary

Day 1: Balmaceda Airport - General Carrera Lake (Puerto Guadal Sector) (240 km)

Balmaceda, vehicle pick-up according to the conditions of Rent a Car. We will drive south along the Carretera Austral to Lake General Carrera and stop at the main natural attractions such as the Chiguay Lagoon, the Ibañez harbor, and the viewpoint of Cerro Castillo. We suggest stopping at Cerro Castillo village to have lunch at one of the restaurants of the town or in the La Sole bus at the road side. We will continue the trip going along the Ibañez River, passing by the Green Lagoon, Cofré Pass, the Murta River up to Lake General Carrera. A couple of km past Puerto Tranquilo in Mansa bay we will sail on the lake to see the Capillas de Marmol Natural Sanctuary, a rock formation carved by the water to form unique caves and caverns of great beauty. Following this tour, we will then travel for about 45 minutes to reach the Hacienda Tres Lagos.

Dinner and overnight (5-6-hour trip).

Day 2: Lake General Carrera / Caleta Tortel (205 km)

Breakfast.
We will drive south along the Carretera Austral to visit Tamango National Reserve in Cochrane. At the Cochrane River we will enjoy the beautiful scenery for about 40 minutes and we will then disembark and go trekking. If you are lucky, you will see a huemul (South Andean Deer) up close. After leaving the reserve, we suggest eating lunch in Cochrane (Ada’s Cafe Restaurant is recommended). We continue along the Carretera Austral down to the district of Tortel (128 km after Cochrane), characterized by its varied landscape and scenic beauty of the fjords, canals, islands, wetlands, forest and, mountainous steep ravines that are part of the Bravo, Pascua, and Baker Rivers, with the latter being the most voluminous river in Chile.

Day 3: Tortel - Isla de Los Muertos - Lake General Carrera

After breakfast, we will sail to the Isla de los Muertos (2 ½ hrs.), located on the banks of the Baker River, declared a National Monument. There are 36 tombs representing the testimony of the colonization and exploitation of the Aysén region mysteries. Back in Tortel, we will have lunch at the Sabores Restaurant. We will then take the Carretera Austral and return to the Lake General Carrera sector.
Dinner and overnight at Hacienda Tres Lagos.

Day 4: Lake General Carrera - Coyhaique

Breakfast.
In the morning we recommend going to the west via the beautiful valley where you can behold nature in its natural, pristine, and wild state. After traveling 50 km, you can start a moderately-difficult hike, crossing an ever green forest and then over a moraine to the viewing of Glacier Exploradores, approximately 20 minutes. Once there, if the weather permits, you can behold the immensity of the Northern Ice Field, Mount San Valentin, and the Glacier Exploradores.
Return to Puerto Tranquilo, lunch at a local restaurant and then return to Coyhaique by the Carretera Austral (218 km).

Day 5: Coyhaique - Balmaceda Airport

Breakfast.
Vehicle drop-off in Balmaceda (50 minutes from Coyhaique to Balmaceda).
We recommend a half-day horse ride and abarbecue at Bonanza, before boarding the plane in the afternoon.
