– Lican Antai Culture 

For the Lican Antai culture tour, the first stop is the archaeological site of Tulor. At 2400 years old and well maintained, the site has been of great value in understanding many aspects of local history. Then, you will travel to the village of San Pedro to explore the old city and its church. Finally, visit Pucará of Quitor: a prehispanic village that provides an outstanding example of original native heritage.

– Full Moon Walk 

This night time trek is only possible during periods of complete illumination from the light of a full moon. You will begin by travelling the Cordillera de la Sal, and through the appropriately named Valley of Mars. Once you have scaled to a decent height, enjoy views of the Catarpe Valley, the oasis of San Pedro, Salar de atacama, The Andes and Cordillera de Domeyko, all visible by the unique and eerie light offered by our celestial cousin.

Duration: 1 hour and 30 minutes | Difficulty: Low

– Route of the Shepherds 

Recreating an ancient route taken by migrating local shepherds and their flocks for many centuries, you will begin this full day hike in the wetlands of vado Machuca. Following the line of a nearby river, the tour passes abandoned ruins of old Stone structures used by the shepherds, though some are still inhabited to this day. The trek continues to Peñaliri, a now deserted village though noteworthy for its well maintained agricultural terraces. Finally, the last few kilometres of this trek will take you on a scenic journey to the Rio Grande, where you will stop for some well earned local food.

– Cornisas

This excursion can be done in the morning or afternoon. Departing the hotel in a van, we will head down the old San Pedro-Calama road to a tunnel that offers spectacular views of the region’s volcanoes. After enjoying a moment at 2,600 meters (8,530 feet) above sea level, we will descend to the main dunes of Valle de la Muerte (Death Valley), an enigmatic landscape that invites contemplation.

Duration: 3 hours | Difficulty: Low

– Machuca / Río Grande 

This walk occurs in Machuca at around 4,000 meters (13,200 feet) above sea level and follows the Peñaliri Riverbed. Along the way, we will see llamas, alpacas and local birds. After lunch in the old mountain village of Peñaliri, we will continue along the cactus-filled, deserted terraces of the gully. We will finish our walk in the village of Río Grande, surrounded by typical crop plantations – garlic, corn and other vegetables of the high plains.

– Copa Coya

This excursion is a high-altitude hike that starts at 4,300 meters (14,100 feet) above sea level in the area of the Tatio Geysers. We will arrive by van and start the hike near Copa Coya Hill with its striking volcanic rock formations. During our journey, we might see fauna such as vizcachas and vicuñas as well as yareta, one of the longest-living plants in the world capable of enduring the extreme climate of the high plains. We will also see old shelters, frozen streams and wayside shrines, typical of the area. This excursion is ideal for acclimating for later volcano ascents.

– Horseback Riding Through The Moon Valley 

Departure from explora horse stables toward La Sal Mountains, crossing the Chula sand dunes. We trot and gallop our horses until we reach The Moon Valley. During this horseback ride we go through pristine and solitary landscapes, experiencing the desert’s emptiness. For riders used to gallop and trot for long spans.

Duration: Full day (6 hours) | Difficulty: Advanced

– Guatin / Puritama 

Departure by van from explora to Guatin, a small shepherd village, where we begin an uphill hike that leads to the edge of the ravine of the Puritama River (Puritama means hot water in Kunza language). We walk for 45 minutes surrounding the ravine until we reach the river’s edge, where old Atacama settlements and the source of Puritama hot springs are located. Here, we have a light snack and enjoy the warm water pools. This exploration offers archeological and anthropological nuances, and an opportunity to get to know the local flora and fauna. Return to the hotel by van.

* Recommended for travelers who want to get acclimatized to the next level hikes that reach 4.000 m.a.s.l. (13200 feet). Please bring a swimsuit and sandals. Towels will be provided.

– Skies

This exploration is a star-gazing session from our own observatory*. It is a different way of exploring the Atacama Desert, the skies of which are the clearest on Earth and therefore, one of the best places to practice astronomy. We begin with a brief open-sky explanation of the Milky Way, its origins and the main constellations, to then gaze at the stars and planets through the telescope. * Telescope with advanced optics and a main high-resolution and sharpness, 40 cm diameter mirror. This exploration is subject to weather conditions.
